Ship Two is the first fully functional ship in Carrier. It has weapons, a control tower, and docks for Submarines, Helicopters, and Airplanes. It is also heavily inspired by the USS Midway. Although, later altered in scale to avoid walking across it taking multiple minutes.
The USS Midway went through numerous evolutions. The version Carrier decided to go for was that that most clearly resembles the 1986 to 1991 period. Important to note: Carrier is a post-apocalyptic game that takes place in a world that has flooded and is full of biologically created monsters, such as leviathans and serpents. So people defaulting to older ships as safe havens makes perfect sense.
This image of the USS Midaway was split into the top and side view reference images when modeling Ship Two in Maya.
This image of the Midway was the primary front reference and was later used to make sure the Control Tower/Bridge was in scale with the remainder of the ship.
Nurbs were used many times throughout. The main instance is in the creation of the ship's hull.
Most of the ship was hard surface modeling, the next best instance of splines and nurbs was in the creation of the ship's fences.
I will be adding sections to this website later on that explore individualized objects such as the Turrets and Bridge in further depth on their own. As everything seen on this ship normally is of my creation.
The Control Tower was made in a separate Maya Scene and later added and scaled to the size of this ship. In due time there will be a more in-depth section going over this piece specifically. I am quite happy with the result, especially all the details for windows and antenna-like pieces.
Turret Design 1 was also made in a separate Maya Scene and too will have its own dedicated section. I say design 1 due to another turret existing in Carrier, but produced by another artist. I am very happy with how mechanical and functional this device looks, and the textures you will see later on truly bring it to life.
The fences are modular and fairly simple. The textures as you will see later give them a certain character and randomness of deterioration.
I decided to highlight the bumpers. They are simply something that I find nothing wrong. I go to see them through exactly as I envisioned, and couldn't be happier.
Highlighting the back of the ship to show off some of the unique assets that took place there, and only there. Namely large bolt-like bumpers.
The scale of the ship makes it hard to photograph. I highly encourage all to watch the video below to not only see this ship, but the variety of other assets added to this game by me and other artists, programmers, and designers. Carrier was truly a joy to work on.
Carrier's Final Build includes Ship Two and many other assets from myself and additional artists.
